Crisis resolution & community relations for the ‘Tent City’ Evacuation

Challenge

A parcel of land at Cherry Street and Lakeshore Boulevard in Toronto, purchased by a major home renovation retailer for a new store, had become known as Tent City – a large homeless encampment housing over 125 people. Contaminated soil, fire hazards, and rising crime made the site unsafe. Despite repeated attempts to resolve the issue, political inaction and public scrutiny left the company in a difficult position.

Strategy

StrategyCorp was engaged to develop and execute a comprehensive plan to make the site safe. The strategy coordinated logistics, security, public affairs, government relations, and crisis communications to ensure safety and protect the company’s reputation under intense public attention.

Outcome

The site was cleared without injury or incident. Residents were provided access to shelters, and the company was commended for its compassionate approach. The retailer preserved public trust and strengthened its reputation, demonstrating how disciplined strategy can achieve humane outcomes amid political and operational complexity.
