Government relations builds industry recognition for Payment Services Company

Challenge

The client, a U.S.-based payments services company, had significant business operations in Canada, but no on-the-ground government relations team.  There were a range of issues that impacted its business in Canada, including payments modernization, open banking, cybersecurity, credit card transaction fees, codes of conduct, data localization, and privacy.

Strategy

We acted as the “eyes and ears” for the client in Canada, and worked to raise the client’s profile with key government and industry stakeholders. Our work included monitoring key issues, arranging and participating in meetings with government, developing submissions to consultations and committee hearings, identifying and connecting with relevant associations, and holding quarterly briefings for the client’s Canadian team.

Outcome

The Payment Services Company is now well known to government and other industry stakeholders as a key player in the Canadian payments ecosystem.  The client has since been invited to participate in numerous government consultations, was invited to be a member of the Payments Canada Stakeholder Advisory Committee, and maintains regular ongoing engagement with key government officials.
