Hospital site selection & future care planning for Grand River Hospital & St. Mary’s Hospital

Challenge

Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital submitted a joint proposal to the Ministry of Health to modernize hospital infrastructure in Waterloo Region. A key component of the proposal was the development of a new joint acute care hospital to meet the region’s growing healthcare needs.

Strategy

StrategyCorp was engaged to design and manage a rigorous site selection process for the new hospital. Working with the Building the Future of Care Together project team, hospital leadership, and boards, StrategyCorp created a transparent and evidence-based approach to identify a preferred site. The firm established an independent Site Selection Panel composed of community leaders and healthcare executives, facilitated community engagement to define selection criteria, and launched a Call for Land Proposals inviting submissions from property owners. StrategyCorp also led public communications throughout the process and supported engagement with all levels of government and local Indigenous communities.

Outcome

Several properties were submitted and evaluated through a structured screening process overseen by the hospitals and a fairness advisor. The selected site, adjacent to the University of Waterloo, positions the region to build a next-generation healthcare facility that will strengthen care delivery and collaboration across Waterloo Region.
