StrategyCorp Guide to Ontario Premier Ford’s New Cabinet

Doug Ford was sworn in today as Ontario’s 26th Premier along with a Cabinet that represents a mix of familiar faces as well as those new to Queen’s Park.  Today also marks the first day of an Ontario Progressive Conservative government since 2003, after fifteen years of Liberal government.

As expected, Ford’s Cabinet is leaner than the previous Liberal government with 21 Ministers (compared to 28 at the time of dissolution). While Ford has long touted his “all-star” team, ultimately choices were made based on several key factors, including the size of cabinet, gender equality, ethnic diversity, and regional distribution.

Not surprisingly, Ford’s leadership rivals Christine Elliott and Caroline Mulroney received key Cabinet appointments as Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, respectively. Other high-profile appointments include:

  • Vic Fedeli, Minister of Finance and Chair of Cabinet
  • Peter Bethlenfalvy, President of the Treasury Board
  • Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Minister of Indigenous Affairs
  • Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services and Women’s Issues
  • Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure

In an attempt to reinforce the message that this is a government “for the people,” Ford’s swearing in was reaffirmed at a public ceremony on the front lawn of Queen’s Park, with hundreds in attendance. Only hours into their new mandates, Ministers will likely meet briefly with their Deputy Ministers and then hit the ground running following the Canada Day long weekend.
