Northeastern University – Celebrating 30 Years
When Northeastern University, a renowned U.S. non-profit institution based in Boston, set its sights on expanding to Toronto, StrategyCorp was their first call. The University was in the midst of establishing a network of global campuses in select North American, European, and Asian cities.
Toronto, with its diverse talent pool and economic growth, was a strategic next step.
But entering Ontario’s postsecondary education sector is far from straightforward. To move ahead, Northeastern needed both regulatory approval and political support—particularly since it would be the first major ranked U.S. institution to open a campus in the province.
Northeastern chose StrategyCorp because of our integrated government relations and management consulting expertise. Our dual mandate was clear: help the University deepen its understanding of the GTA’s postsecondary and labour market landscape, and navigate the complex political and regulatory terrain required for a successful launch.
We conducted detailed market analysis, benchmarking masters-level offerings across Ontario universities and colleges to ensure Northeastern’s proposed programs. Our work helped refine their initial long list of programs down to four distinct, labour-market-aligned offerings.
On the government relations side, we developed and executed a strategy that not only guided the University through the administrative steps but also worked with decision-makers to establish a credible, transparent set of approval criteria for foreign institutions. This helped build a pathway for political support and ensured that Northeastern’s proposal stood up to public and sector scrutiny.
Northeastern’s Toronto campus was ultimately approved and opened as part of its global network of graduate campuses. A decade later, it remains a case study in how StrategyCorp’s integrated advisory model helps institutions enter complex markets—and succeed.
