Will Trump’s Tariffs Create “Jobs for the Boys?”
President Donald Trump’s fascination with tariffs continues to create uncertainty within the business community and in financial markets. The goals of his eclectic tariff agenda vary depending on the settings and the audience. One of Trump’s stated objectives is to “attract” firms to invest in the United States, thus creating economic growth and manufacturing jobs.
In this new report, David McGown and Sébastien Labrecque highlight that, despite the President’s continued attempts and reliance on tariffs, there may never be a manufacturing renaissance of “jobs for the boys (and girls)” to the levels Trump claims. Heightened uncertainty, the changing nature of manufacturing, and ongoing labour and capacity challenges in the United States will limit the job creation that can result from Trump’s tariff strategy.
