Michael Heenan

Over the past 15 years, Mike has played senior executive roles in the acute care sector with a focus on strategy, engagement, quality, patient safety, patient experience, performance measurement and leadership development.

Mike’s recent accomplishments include the development of multiple hospital strategic and clinical services plans; implementing quality improvement plans that improved wait times, infection rates, patient satisfaction and medication reconciliation; establishing patient and family advisory councils; implementing a leadership development program for managers, directors and physician chiefs; adopting a risk management model for boards; and, co-leading the integration of three Ontario hospitals.

An Assistant Professor within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, Mike teaches health quality management and patient safety at the School of Rehabilitation Sciences and the DeGroote School of Business.  Pursuing his PhD in Health Management, Mike has published his work on measurement, physician engagement, and the role of governance in driving quality.  Mike also serves as a review editor for Healthcare Quarterly, one of Canada’s most read health journals.
